My Air Conditioning Tech recommends this Air Conditioner Cover

I just bought a new air conditioner for my house. When it was being installed, the I asked the technician if I should buy an air conditioner cover to help protect it during the winter months, when I wasn’t using it.

The technician replied, “It depends.” “OK. But what does it depend on,” I asked. He said, “It depends on on the type of cover that you choose to buy. Don’t buy a super cheap cover that you are going to have to replace year after year, cause you are just throwing money out the window. Plus these cheap covers can be bad for your unit and decrease the life of your ac unit.”

He added, “We like to recommend a company called, AC Covers out of Michigan.” In looking this up on the Google, the company is A/C Covers, Inc., www.accovers.com.

So the researcher in me decided to take a journey over to the A/C Covers website.

Here are some of the highlights from the site:

Unique Design Feature: A/C Covers brand air conditioner covers are designed to be inches shorter than the metal bottom of the air conditioner to allow for proper air flow. Our designs were created from the minds of HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) industry professionals and take little, but important, details like this into consideration. This is a trademark design feature of our brand.

  • Covers, which go all the way to the ground, like the generic “one-size-fits-all” covers, trap condensation, which lends itself to accelerated rusting and can decrease the life of your unit.
  • Also, it is more likely that a small animal (mice and other critters) will nest in a ac unit that has a cover go to the ground. These small animals tend to chew on wires, which also decreases the life of your unit.
  • The bottom edge does not come with a hem and it will remain as sturdy as the rest of the cover. It will not unravel, become tattered or roll up. It will remain in its current condition for the entire life. Our warranty is full coverage, 100% of all aspects of the product.
  • Available in 7 different colors to match landscaping or home exterior

Company Highlights:

  • Every air conditioner cover (and all other covers) are custom made to my specific air conditioning unit based on the model number. I think this is the BEST FEATURE. A/C Covers says that it will fit like a glove.
  • In business for more than 30 years
  • Woman Owned and Operated
  • Manufactured in America
  • 3-year warranty for all custom products

Price: I found A/C Cover air conditioner covers on their website, and on Amazon.

  • Website: $59.99 plus shipping (shipping cost depends on where you live). For me, it was $14.99. Total: $74.98. 2-4 weeks for delivery.
  • Amazon: $89.99 plus FREE shipping. Total: $89.99 but quicker delivery. Not an Amazon Prime item, but Amazon says it ships within 10 days of ordering. This is listed as a custom product on Amazon, because you have to add in your manufacturer and model number. So, you are paying a little extra for it to be delivered faster.

Summary: I have decided to take the recommendation of my heating and cooling company and buy an A/C Cover. If I am going to spend a few thousand dollars on a new air conditioner, I will willingly pay for a good ac cover and make it so I get all the life out of my air conditioner.

How to Prevent Your Air Conditioner From Freezing Up

We’re in the hottest part of the summer and your air conditioner is working overtime. The added stress of running your air conditioning all day takes a toll. Your AC system can freeze up, which definitely makes it  inconvenient, hot in your house or business and may lead to costly, unplanned repairs.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways to prevent a frozen air conditioner.

1. Refrigerant Charge

Every year, schedule a routine inspection with your air conditioning repair team. During your evaluation, professionals check to make sure your HVAC system is free of leaks, damage or worn parts. Plus, your air conditioning company can refill the coolant at the same time. With the proper coolant levels, the odds of your unit freezing over are significantly decreased. In the past, I thought that spending money on a service contract was silly and a waste of money, but when it’s time for service or check-up, I find that with a contract I am first in line and if there are any issues, I am also on the VIP list.

2. Help With Air Flow

A key factor to a healthy HVAC system that never freezes up is proper air flow. Every season, swap out your air filters. This way, you can rest easy knowing you and your family are breathing perfectly filtered air and your unit isn’t at risk of freezing due to air flow issues.

3. Factor in Outdoor Temperatures

As a general rule of thumb, your air conditioning system should not be turned on if outdoor temperatures are 60 degrees or below. By opening windows, you’ll save money on energy bills and give your unit a much-needed break while staying comfortable. Easily enjoy a cool summer breeze and avoid an AC freeze at the same time.

And, when your Air conditioner isn’t in use, such as the winter months, be sure to cover it with a properly fitting air conditioner cover that protects the unit, prevents condensation and keeps out the harsh weather, such as the covers created by AC Covers.

Should I Cover My Air Conditioner Unit?

An air conditioner is an investment that will bring you years of cool comfort. Repeated beatings by the nature (ice, snow, sleet, salty sea air) and build-up of debris (leaves, twigs, pine needles, etc.) in and around your air conditioner can cause damage and inefficiencies.

By keeping your air conditioner clean and protected an AC Cover can save you money in a number of different ways. An AC Cover will:

  • Extends the life of your air conditioner and keeps the cabinet looking new year after year after year
  • Increases the efficiency of your air conditioner – By keeping the condensing coil cleaner you allow it to run at peak efficiency, which not only improves the operation but also reduces your energy bills.
  • Decreases maintenance costs – a clean and protected air conditioner reduces maintenance costs and prepares your air conditioner for the upcoming season.
